James,

David is correct that Burke's religious upbringing was in the
Christian Science faith. In UNENDING CONVERSATIONS: NEW WRITINGS BY AND ABOUT KENNETH
BURKE (Eds. Henderson & Williams, Southern Illinois University Press, 2001),
your graduate student can find an essay by Michael Feehan entitled "Kenneth
Burke and Mary Baker Eddy." Feehan makes the case that Burke got inspiration
from Eddy's writings for his concept of perspective by incongruity. Reading P&
C, one gets the idea that Nietzsche was the only source. Feehan argues
otherwise pretty convincingly. The name "Christian Science" is itself a good example
of such an incongruous combination.
