The Abramson Cancer Center Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource is seeking to fill a position at the senior leadership level, the Operations Manager (job description below). The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of flow cytometry experience in both analytical and cell sorting applications.  The facility has been recognized as one of "outstanding merit" by the National Cancer Institute for over 20 years and recently received the new "exceptional merit" evaluation. It serves as the sole flow cytometry core facility for the University of Pennsylvania and serves 1000 users in 9 satellite locations. The lab is widely respected as one of the foremost academic flow cytometry laboratories in the United States. This is a unique opportunity to join a strong team in academic flow cytometry. The Operations Manager for Flow Cytometry coordinates and monitors the workings of all aspects of the core’s daily business. The OM directly supervises 6 staff members, monitors and evaluates staff performance and helps in hiring of new staff members. The incumbent implements staff performance of the duties required by the facility’s Director and Technical Director concerning the facility’s website, billing and administrative policies, by delegating tasks and accountabilities. The manager is responsible for improving the processes and policies to maximize output by the staff, as well as data acquired by investigators while using the facility. The Operations Manager also insures that the nearly 900 yearly facility users remain competitive in their respective fields. The manager is responsible to monitor and improve support services for the facility by facilitating communication and coordination between services such as Human Resources, Finance and IT. The manager is also the conduit for the staff with the top management and assists in the development and implementation of strategic plans to keep the facility up-to- date.
The Operations Manager also directs a highly regarded and extensive training program known nationally. Approximately 300 new users each year benefit from a two-part course on the fundamentals of flow cytometry. The manager directs a teaching team of 3-4, in both a lecture format and in multiple hands-on skills workshop settings. The OM creates and designs individualized educational materials for specific groups while updating the current materials based on new advancements in the field of cytomics. The OM also supervises the projects of staff members whose projects are typically collaborative research or development efforts in cytomics mostly in advanced applications.
