36th Annual Research Course in Flow Cytometry
June 8-14, 2013
Center for Biomedical Engineering University of New Mexico, Albuquerque

This comprehensive course covers: instrumentation from basic design 
through performance evaluation to state-of-the-art innovations; data 
analysis from basic principles through advanced modeling methods; and 
applications in cell biology, immunology, cell signaling, fluorescent 
protein analysis, bead--based assays, flow imaging, high-throughput 
screening and sorting. The faculty is comprised of over 20 distinguished 
members of the flow cytometry community, assisted by technical expertise 
from a dozen different flow cytometry vendors. The course consists of 19 
lectures and 16 different hands-on laboratory sessions. The lectures 
progress from basic instrumentation and data analysis through more 
advanced analysis methods and finish with descriptions of a wide variety 
of applications. Laboratory sessions address sample preparation, 
instrument features and operation, data collection and analysis, common 
and more cutting edge flow assays and typical problems encountered in 
flow cytometry. The lab sessions are hands-on, with plenty of time and 
opportunity for interaction with the instructors. Lab instructors use a 
wide range of flow cytometers/sorters, including the latest instruments 
on the market. Each participant will attend six different 3-hour 
laboratory sessions, chosen from the 16 different offerings, allowing 
participants to tailor their experience based on interests and 
experience. During one evening session representatives from the 
commercial vendors will be available to demonstrate and discuss the 20 
different instruments operating on-site. A second evening session will 
feature short presentations on next-generation flow cytometers and 
applications. Our Keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Diether 
Recktenwald, who will provide a historical perspective on the future of 
flow cytometry instrumentation. Each participant will receive extensive 
lecture notes and laboratory handout materials. One afternoon and 
evening will be free for participants to enjoy the many regional 
attractions of northern New Mexico, and the last evening includes a 
banquet with live entertainment. Registration fees include all lectures, 
6 laboratory sessions, course materials, breakfast & lunch each day, 
coffee breaks with snacks, refreshments at two evening sessions and the 
banquet. Inexpensive housing will be available in newly renovated 
on-campus dormitories or at a special rate at a local hotel.
