PE and PI together: Summary

Thanks to everybody for their help with the question of whether running PE and PI in the same sample is advisable. There is some conflict of opinion, probably due to differences in application, but here is a summary of suggestions, all of which settled some of my misunderstandings:

1.. Use 7-AAD instead (or TOPRO-3 with a red laser, or Sytox Green)
2.. Use low concentration of PI instead (0.5 ug/mL)
3.. Gate out PI positive population, and then compensation isn't required at all (this may not work if PE stains very intensely)
4.. It is incorrect to determine PI and PE in separate samples, because gating for viable cells then isn't directly possible, and so non-specific PE-binding to dead cells isn't taken into account.
