formaldehyde and autofluorescence

I've seen lots of comments in the archives regarding the rise in
autofluorescence as the paraformaldehyde solutions age. Can anyone provide
a published reference as to the cause.	Neither repolymerization of
formaldehyde or oxidation to formic acid should yield anything that
fluorescesces. Or is it involved with the fixed cell which changes? Thanks
to all of you.
