Thank you everyone for your helpful responses to this question.  For anyone who
is interested a brief summary follows: 

 It seems that most people place the tissue in RPMI1640 with Fetal calf sera
prior to transport and processing. A sizable minority use RPMI1640 without added
sera.  Time of processing does not seem to be a major concern as some people let
samples sit overnight prior to processing.  Different people apparently prepare
their cell suspensions slightly differently, however everyone seems to use
fairly gentle techniques.
