I would second the idea of using an esterase substrate to measure live cells. I
suggest that calcein-AM is a better choice. It is very bright and is retained
in live cells for many hours. Other labels such as CFDA can be lost in much less
time. Since the emmision is also FITC-like, the possibility for 2-color
live/dead labeling is still intact. Good luck.
